Finally a mage win! This win had one save scum from death. I was killed because I counterspelled a lot of things and then never got an action for a hundred turns or so. I was offered resurrection by Xavias, but I didn't take it because I wanted to read the message log and do a char dump to see if I could figure out what happened. This game also had many save-scums from god-anger to avoid the mollification bug. In the end, I still ended up with Xavias angry at me because I got tired of save and restore, so I just dealt with the occasional confusion. The bottom line, though, is that it is possible for a mage win, with some caveats. It took me a long time to get a viable mage going. This one was successful because it was a mage built for melee combat. I always had trouble with relying just on spells for various reasons. Usually it boiled down to running out of mana because I just couldn't do enough damage. With this mage, I went with Arcane specialization so I wouldn't have any negatives. Other mage specialties have really nice bonuses, but I always found a buffing spell that I wanted that became prohibitively expensive with the specialization I chose. An important one is Floating Disc. I would have a really hard time lugging all those spellbooks around without it. I also focussed this character on Counterspell. I kept the important skills maximized and chose feats that would enhance it (like Broad Counterspell). For the most part, I think counterspell is not very useful. I started out using it, but I found that I would never get an offensive action, so by the end of the game the only thing I counterspelled was Shatter. The rest of my char choices focussed on melee combat. I took enhancement spells to build stats (like Bull's Strength) and feats like Cleave. I also went with One Body One Soul because of the low starting Con and high eventual Wis from Xavias. That kept me alive a number of times. Another problem I ran into was with spells like lightningbolt, fireball, and icestorm. I was really excited to get them, but I never got to use them because of those pesky neutrals. Playing an evil mage would be a lot more fun, I think. :) I also think that lightningbolt destroyed equipment because I felt guilty or uneasy the one time I used it and I did not see any neutrals around.
